Emerging poet Elias Tucker offers much more than a love poem with his “Corona del Mar”. He offers praise and gratitude to God. Elias isn’t stingy with the imagery as readers are blessed with lush California seaside observations, such as sun-warmed skin and foam washing across the sand, but the sacred is never far away as each stanza is separated by what feels like an intonement of “God be praised”. “I wrote this poem while visiting my hometown with my fiancée,” Elias remarked to The Dewdrop. “Sitting on the cliffs above the beach with her, I was struck with awe and gratitude for where I was in life. This poem came to me shortly thereafter,” he explained.
Corona del Mar
Teal waves roll in steady,
foaming tips brush at smooth sand.
She holds my hand and watches
God be praised
The sky is clear
today, that never happens this early.
Why couldn’t she have come earlier
God be praised
A jealous sun lashes downwards,
rips at skin too pale.
I never noticed her freckles until now
God be praised
The ocean has breath, did you know?
It exhales cool mist with every wave.
God be praised for her warm breath on my neck
God be praised
